Although I've always written, “Inconstant Moon” is my debut novel.
>My personal blog began May 25th 2009.
Blogging reminded me just how important writing is to me.
Later in the year I spun off the Stop Usage Based Billing blog, which has evolved into a creditable online reference demystifing important tech issues like UBB and ACTA.
During 2010's premature prorogation I began the political blog Oh! Canada
A great many words seem to have been trapped in my brain during my hiatus, and now they are clamoring to get out.
The key to making my adventure in novelling happen has been moral support from family and friends.
If it were not for Nienke Hinton I wouldn't even have known anything like NaNoWriMo existed.
Another important component of getting back to writing was NaNoWriMo, the wonderful online “National Novel Writing Month” initiative. Very importantly NaNoWriMo gave me a deadline. I wrote the first part of my novel-- nearly sixty thousand words-- during the month of November. It's taken an additional five months to get another fifty thousand. Now I'm editing.
My intention has always been to follow in the footsteps of my copyright heroes, writer Cory Doctorow and film maker Nina Paley, who are living copyright reform. My intention is to self publish. Maybe at some point I will end up with a traditional publishing house, but I'm not interested in going that route just now.
I haven't done this before, but when when the novel's done I expect to make the book digitally available here under a creative commons license. I'll let you know when the mechanics are worked out.
If you're interested in the day to day angst, you can join or watch the identi.ca group “My Novel” to see my progress. You can follow me on Identi.ca and Twitter
I have the first proof in hand, (woo hoo! a REAL book!) but I think I'll be making some changes and getting another before publication. I'm planning to serialize it here, but first I have to have it finalized.
