General John Sumner Russwurm 1793-1856 married Sarah Martin Clark,daughter of Samuel and Virginia Martin Clark about 1817. They wereparents of 12 children. They moved to Rutherford Co., in 1837. He onceowned a factory and commissary in Murfreesboro. He died in 1856 and isburied in the old City Cemetery in Murfreesboro. Before coming toRutherford Co. he lived in Williamson Co. near Triune where on Sumner'sKnob a large number of graves of Carls's and Russwurm may be found.
The first account of any Russwurm, in the United States, is of WilliamAlexander Russwurm, of Philadelphia, a soldier in the Continental Army,under General Washington. He was born Feb 11th, 1761, and died in 1793,about five months after peace was declared, he married Elanor Sumner ofthe Caroline Line, in Philadelphia. She was born in 1763, and died in1860, and was buried in the Hanover Cemetery of Philadelphia, in thefamily lot. They became the parents of two sons, William AlexanderRusswurm, Jr. and John Sumner Russwurm. Some time after the death ofWilliam Alexander Russwurm, Sr. She, his wife, Elanor Russwurm, madearrangements to marry again to _____Creamer, and he refused to undertakethe responsibility of rearing her two sons, and she gave them away.William Alexander Russwurm, Jr., to his uncle John Russwurm, who was atthat time living on the Island of Jamaica, and who reared him. Date ofhis birth and death not know.
John Sumner Russwurm was born on John's Street in Philadelphia, Jan 29th,1793, died in Rutherford County, Tennessee, Jan 17th, 1860 and was buriedin the City Cemetery of Murfreesboro, Tenn. In the early 1800's, he cameto live with his cousin, Thomas E. Sumner, of Williamson County,Tennessee, the nephew of his mother, Elanor Russwurm, where he grew tomanhood.
He was a soldier in the Creek War with rank of Lieut.
