William Alexander Russwurm came from Germany to help fight the Revolutionary War. He married Eleanor Sumner who was a sister of Jethro Sumner, General in the Rev. War in the N.C. line, in 1787. The first child of the union was John Sumner Russwurm. b. in 1793 on St. John St. in Philadelphia. A second son named William Alexander went back to England.

The first account of any Russwurm, in the United States, is of William Alexander Russwurm, of Philadelphia, a soldier in the Continental Army, under General Washington. He was born Feb 11th, 1761, and died in 1793,about five months after peace was declared, he married Elanor Sumner of the Caroline Line, in Philadelphia. She was born in 1763, and died in1860, and was buried in the Hanover Cemetery of Philadelphia, in the family lot. They became the parents of two sons, William Alexander Russwurm, Jr. and John Sumner Russwurm. Some time after the death of William Alexander Russwurm, Sr. Eleanor Russwurm, made arrangements to marry again to _____Creamer, and he refused to undertake the responsibility of rearing her two sons, and she gave them away.William Alexander Russwurm, Jr., to his uncle John Russwurm, who was atthat time living on the Island of Jamaica, and who reared him. Date of his birth and death not known.
John Sumner Russwurm was born on John's Street in Philadelphia, Jan 29th,1793, died in Rutherford County, Tennessee, Jan 17th, 1860 and was buried in the City Cemetery of Murfreesboro, Tenn. In the early 1800's, he came to live with his cousin, Thomas E. Sumner, of Williamson County,Tennessee, the nephew of his mother, Elanor Russwurm, where he grew to manhood.
